Most of the reverse-engineering work we do for business clients starts the same way: a part that works, a vendor who's gone quiet or gone out of business, and nothing on file describing what the part actually is.
What "no CAD file" usually means in practice
Sometimes there's genuinely nothing — the original was tooled decades ago and no digital record survives. More often there's a drawing, but it's for the part as originally specified, and the part in your hand has since been through a running change or two that the paperwork never caught up with. Either way, the part itself is the only reliable source of truth.

Our process
- Function first. Before we touch a scanner, we establish what the part actually does — load path, seal, clearance, thermal exposure — because that determines which dimensions matter and which are incidental to how it was made.
- Scan and measure. 3D scanning captures the geometry; calipers and, where needed, a CMM confirm the dimensions that matter functionally, since a scan alone can drift by tenths of a millimetre on critical features.
- Rebuild as parametric CAD, with tolerances applied deliberately rather than inherited from scan noise. This is the difference between a file that looks right and one that's actually manufacturable.
- Validate against the original. Fit check where possible, and material/process selection matched to how the part is actually loaded, not just how the original happened to be made.
What you get at the end
A clean, editable CAD model with documented tolerances — not a scan mesh with a new file extension. That's what makes it usable for a second-source quote, an internal manufacturing review, or a straight reprint order, whichever you need.
When we'd tell you not to reverse-engineer
If the part is still in production somewhere and can be sourced, that's usually cheaper and faster than a reverse-engineering job, and we'll say so. This process earns its cost when the original supply is genuinely gone.
