Walk through our shop catalogue and PETG shows up on almost every exterior listing. That's not a default we fell into — it's what wins on the specific things exterior automotive trim needs.
What exterior trim actually has to survive
Sun, heat cycling under the bonnet or against black paint, road spray, and the occasional knock. Reproduced parts have to survive that better than the original did, since the whole reason we're printing a replacement is that the factory part failed.
Where PETG wins
- UV stability. PETG doesn't go brittle in sunlight the way unreinforced ABS does — which is exactly the failure mode that kills most of the original parts we're replacing.
- Impact resistance. It flexes slightly before it cracks rather than shattering, which matters on anything near a parking-lot height.
- Paintability. Takes primer and paint cleanly without special surface prep, so a body-colour match is straightforward.
- Cost. It's an efficient FDM material to print, which keeps exterior trim affordable relative to resin or SLS alternatives.
Where we choose something else instead
ASA when UV resistance needs to go a step further than PETG, or when we're matching a specific factory bead-blasted texture — ASA takes that finish better. SLA resin for badges, switch bezels and anything where crisp lettering or fine surface detail matters more than bulk toughness. SLS nylon for parts that flex under repeated load — clips, handles, anything that gets grabbed or snapped into place hundreds of times over its life.
The short version
PETG is the right default for exterior trim because it matches the actual failure mode we're fixing. We move off it deliberately, not by habit, when a part's job calls for something else.
